Baptist Health breaks ground on 197,000 SF Griffin neuroscience hub
Baptist Health broke ground on a 197,000 SF neuroscience building at its Baptist Hospital main campus, and Ken Griffin's total gift rose to $75M.
Baptist Health South Florida broke ground Wednesday on a 197,000-square-foot home for the Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute, and the Citadel founder’s total commitment to the project now stands at $75 million.
Why it matters
The building is one of the larger private hospital-campus projects in Miami-Dade right now, and it is philanthropy-led. Griffin’s original $50 million gift, announced in 2024, was the largest single donation in the system’s history. The new $25 million tranche is a separate fund for the institute’s work, not construction.
The timeline also moved. The 2024 announcement pointed to a 2027 opening. Baptist now says early 2029.
The numbers
- Size: 197,000 square feet on the Baptist Hospital main campus.
- Gift: $75 million total, $50 million in 2024 plus $25 million announced Wednesday.
- New $25 million fund: the Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute Transformational Impact Fund.
- Staffing: 16 new sub-specialty provider positions.
- Programs: outpatient physical, speech and occupational therapy, neuroinfusion, expanded clinical trials, and Baptist’s first academic lecture theater.
- Opening: early 2029.
- Conditions: the institute is set up to treat dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease, with the new fund directed to research, innovation, education and prevention.
Baptist’s release did not name a construction cost, architect or general contractor, and we did not find a Miami-Dade permit for the building. We are not guessing at either.
What’s next
Watch for the building permit and the contractor award, which would show the real construction value and who is carrying a nearly 200,000 SF healthcare build into 2029. Baptist is also building elsewhere: see our coverage of its Homestead Hospital tower permit. Follow the wider pipeline in South Florida.
