Napster Drops Its $160M Fort Lauderdale Movie Studio and HQ
Napster has backed out of its $160M movie studio and headquarters on city land in Fort Lauderdale, handing the project to its original local developer.
Napster, the AI platform formerly known as Infinite Reality, has walked away from the $160 million movie studio and headquarters it announced for a 61-acre city-owned site at 1400 NW 31st Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. The company will not say why, only that the project “no longer aligns with its priorities.” The land now reverts to Fort Lauderdale Studio Initiative and developer Michael Ullian, the local group Napster had originally partnered with before taking on the self-development role it is now giving up.
Why it matters
A marquee tenant naming a studio deal after itself, then quietly handing the dirt back, is the kind of reversal that does not get its own press release. Napster put its brand on a headquarters and film campus pitched at 1,000-plus jobs and 100,000 square feet of office space on public land, the sort of anchor commitment that cities point to when they justify a land deal. When that anchor pulls out and the only public explanation is a one-line statement about shifting priorities, the burden falls on Fort Lauderdale Studio Initiative to prove the project still has a real occupant behind it, not just a name on the announcement. For developers watching public-private studio and entertainment deals anywhere in South Florida, the lesson is that a splashy corporate name attached to a groundbreaking is not the same as a signed, durable lease.
The numbers
Napster first stepped back from self-developing the project in December, ceding day-to-day control to Fort Lauderdale Studio Initiative while reportedly retaining rights to eventually own or lease space in the finished studio. The Real Deal’s September 18 report describes a further step: Napster now backing out of the project entirely, with Ullian’s group left holding the full $160 million, 61-acre commitment on city land without Napster as a named partner.
What’s next
Fort Lauderdale officials have indicated the project is still moving forward under Fort Lauderdale Studio Initiative, but neither the city nor Ullian’s group has said what happens to the space once earmarked for Napster’s name and jobs pledge. Watch for a revised development agreement or site plan filing with the city that either names a replacement anchor tenant or quietly downsizes the office component Napster was supposed to fill.
