Palm Beach commissioner moves to pause Ag Reserve building
Commissioner Maria Sachs says she will propose a pause on new housing in the 22,000-acre Ag Reserve in October. No text or date has been filed.
Palm Beach County Commissioner Maria Sachs says she will propose a pause on new housing development in the Agricultural Reserve “later in October.” She made the commitment after a community meeting she hosted Friday, Oct. 2, at the South County Civic Center drew more than 1,000 RSVPs for roughly 300 seats.
“I think it’s time to take a pause,” Sachs told WPTV. She said she is not opposed to development in general but wants to manage its pace and character.
Why it matters
The Ag Reserve covers about 22,000 acres west of Delray Beach and Boca Raton. It is the last large block of greenfield land in southern Palm Beach County, so a pause hits homebuilders’ land pipelines directly. It also hits anyone holding Ag Reserve land under contract.
The trigger was a set of county-approved uses: a DMV office, a nursing home and an Islamic center. Residents raised traffic and a lack of notice. Many were turned away when doors closed at 9:30 a.m.
The numbers
- 22,000 acres in the Reserve, per WPTV.
- More than 1,000 RSVPs for about 300 seats.
- A 500-foot notification radius today. Residents want 1,000 feet.
- One of seven commissioners: Sachs said she opposes the projects but cannot act alone.
What’s next
No date or text for the restrictions has been filed. That gap matters, because the scope of a pause (new housing only, or all new applications) and its start date decide which pending projects it catches.
Sachs said she wants future developments to require direct commissioner approval. A second, larger public meeting is planned, with no date or location set.
Builders with Ag Reserve exposure should watch the Board of County Commissioners agenda for the filing. Our broader coverage is on the South Florida hub.
