Sachs Floats Housing Pause in Ag Reserve West of Delray, Boca

Palm Beach County Commissioner Maria Sachs says it is time to pause new housing in the Agricultural Reserve, the roughly 22,000-acre farm belt west of Delray Beach and Boca Raton. For builders, it is a fight over the last large stretch of buildable ground in South Palm Beach County.

Why it matters

Sachs put it plainly: “I think it’s time to take a pause.” She said she is not against development, but does not want one big development after another. Residents have complained that communities keep going up in a reserve meant to protect farmland.

She also said nothing should be approved unless it comes before the commission. That points at what builders should watch: how approvals move, and whether smaller items get review at the dais.

No builder or pending project was named in the report as a target of the pause. We are not naming any.

The numbers

The reserve covers about 22,000 acres. Sachs held a community meeting on the reserve’s future on Friday at 9:30 a.m.; in-person capacity was reached and a livestream ran. Her specific land-use proposals are expected later in October.

What we could not confirm: how long a pause would last, whether it would cover applications or only final approvals, and a commission vote date. The report gives none of these, and we did not find a county agenda item.
