Wellington clears 98-acre showgrounds expansion off the Preserve

The horse capital's expansion is a land-use story: 90 acres came out of a protected preserve to make it happen.

Wellington International is building out a 98-acre second campus, Wellington International South, that will push the Palm Beach County venue’s footprint to 215 acres, after the village council approved pulling land from the Equestrian Preserve to make room.

Why it matters

For builders and land-use developers, Wellington is a reminder that the entitlement, not the arena, is the hard part. The horse-show economy is one of Palm Beach County’s most valuable land uses, but expanding it meant removing roughly 90 acres from a protected Equestrian Preserve, the kind of pre-emption fight that usually drags for years. Getting the council to sign off is what unlocked a nine-figure build, and it sets a precedent for how much preserve land the village will trade for economic activity. That precedent matters to every developer eyeing large parcels in and around Wellington, where the preserve designation has long capped what can be built.

The scale is real construction work, not a facelift. A new campus of this size means arenas, barns, drainage and access roads delivered on a competition-season deadline, which is a demanding schedule for any general contractor.

The numbers

Wellington International South will feature an 86,000-square-foot covered arena standing 65 feet tall, five barns of 60 stalls each, new competition arenas, bridle paths and a dedicated grass derby field. It is slated to open for competition in the fall of 2026 and will become the future home of the Adequan Global Dressage Festival while hosting FEI show jumping, hunter derbies and other seasonal events. The buildout takes the combined venue to 215 acres.

What’s next

Watch the residential component tied to the approval, because homes carved from preserve land are where the community pushback will concentrate. For builders, the opening is the seasonal-deadline construction that a fall competition date demands. Track it on the South Florida hub.
