Ex-CIA official's $102M Palm Beach buys head to forfeiture
A former senior federal official pleaded guilty to wire fraud and agreed to forfeit four Florida luxury properties bought with about $102M.
A former senior federal official pleaded guilty on Oct. 6 to wire fraud in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, and agreed to hand over the Florida real estate he bought with stolen government money. The Justice Department says the scheme obtained about $193.6 million.
Why it matters
Prosecutors say the defendant invented a classified program, then directed about $145 million in wire transfers through a holding company he controlled. The Justice Department release says the money bought luxury real estate in Florida he intended to resell for profit. CBS12 reported that about $102 million of it went into Palm Beach and Hobe Sound.
For the trophy market, the point is supply. Four high-end assets are now committed to forfeiture under the plea agreement, which means they will leave private hands and eventually be sold by the government. The case file does not give a sale schedule.
The numbers
CBS12 listed the purchases as two Palm Beach homes at $21.9 million and $27 million, a Palm Beach parcel at $13.65 million, and a Hobe Sound parcel at $40 million. Those four figures add to roughly $102.55 million.
The Justice Department release gives no street addresses, prices or holding company name, and we have not yet matched the deeds in the county records, so treat the per-property prices as press-reported. The release does confirm:
- Case No. 1:26-cr-00185 in the Eastern District of Virginia.
- About $193,590,400 in federal funds.
- 298 gold bars, bought at a government cost of about $46 million.
- Forfeiture of the properties, gold, cash, watches and two vehicles.
CBS News reported that about $38.6 million remained in the holding company as of the plea.
What’s next
Sentencing is set for Jan. 28, 2027, with a maximum of 20 years in prison. Forfeited real estate generally moves through a federal asset process after the criminal case, so a sale into the market is more likely a 2027 event than a near-term one. Any lender or third-party claim could slow it. The Justice Department says its investigation is continuing.
