Houston agenda item would hire Cushman to sell 2 downtown buildings

Outlets report both buildings date to 1966 and would go to market as-is, with any sale agreement needing a separate council vote.

Houston’s council agenda for Oct. 7, 2026 carries a marketing agreement that would put two downtown city buildings, 1200 Travis St and 611 Walker St, in front of buyers. Brokerage Cushman & Wakefield of Texas is the named agent.

Why it matters

The agenda item, Ordinance 2026-0883, is the first step toward two downtown parcels leaving city hands. The city’s own record gives no list price, buyer or closing date.

Outlets report the buildings house the Houston Police Department headquarters and Public Works, and that both date to 1966. They say the sale is meant to help pay for moving those departments into the former Continental Airlines Building on Smith St.

For developers and agents, the signal is supply. Two as-is, city-owned sites in the central business district, marketed through a single broker, would add to downtown inventory. The agenda shows the item, not the vote result. Houston has no zoning, so a buyer’s levers are deed restrictions, plats and city permitting, not a land-use change request. See the Houston market hub for related filings.

The numbers

  • Agenda item: 20, Ordinance 2026-0883, Council District I.
  • Scope: marketing and sale of two properties, 611 Walker and 1200 Travis.
  • Continental building: $55M purchase, approved in August, per ABC13.
  • Value: one commercial broker told ABC13 each building could be worth $100M to $200M. That is an opinion, not an appraisal.

What’s next

The city has not published a list price or a timeline. Community Impact reports that council keeps final approval of any sale agreement, so a buyer would need a second vote.

We will check the Harris Central Appraisal District accounts for both addresses and the next council agendas for a sale ordinance. Compare this with the Harris commissioners data center authority item for how public-property decisions are moving this week.
