Equinix, Nvidia, Together AI Launch Inference Exchange

Equinix, Nvidia and Together AI announced the Equinix Inference Exchange on September 2, a distributed AI inference program that pairs Nvidia’s Enterprise Reference Architectures with Together AI’s inference platform, delivered through Equinix’s global data centers and connected via Equinix Fabric. The companies said the service becomes available starting in the first quarter of 2027.

Why it matters

Training clusters chase cheap power and cheap land, which is why hyperscalers keep signing gigawatt-scale deals in places like rural Utah. Inference is a different site-selection problem. Serving a live model response to an enterprise application means the compute has to sit close to where users and data already are, which favors colocation campuses inside or near metro areas over remote greenfield sites. That is the logic behind building this on Equinix’s existing footprint rather than announcing new construction: the pitch to enterprise customers is proximity and interconnection, not raw megawatts. For developers watching data center demand, an inference-driven leasing cycle looks different from a training-driven one. It favors metro colocation space with strong network density over remote sites with cheap power, and it moves in smaller, more distributed increments rather than single hyperscale campuses. That could spread demand across more markets, including established colocation hubs, instead of concentrating it in a handful of power-rich rural counties.

The numbers

Together AI’s platform supports more than 200 open-source models. Equinix describes its footprint as more than 280 data centers across 77 metros globally. The companies did not disclose a power capacity figure, a dollar figure, or which specific facilities will host the Inference Exchange first.

What’s next

Equinix said Inference Exchange launches alongside Equinix Fabric One, a connectivity product aimed at linking distributed AI environments, and both were unveiled at the company’s first Equinix Horizon customer event. No metro, including South Florida, has been named for an initial rollout, so the near-term signal for developers is watching which Equinix facilities get named as the Q1 2027 date approaches.
